|
(Washington, DC) The Unified Communications Center (UCC), the home of the Office of Unified Communications (OUC) and the DC Homeland Security and Emergency Management Agency (HSEMA), has received a prestigious award from the Construction Management Association of America (CMAA), National Capitol Chapter. The UCC has received the CMAA Project Achievement Award for 2006 in the category for projects with construction valued from $50 - $100 million. The UCC project was implemented by the Office of the Chief Technology Officer (OCTO) to consolidate the “command and control” functions of the first emergency responders, including public safety E911 and non-public safety, such as the Citywide Call Center (727-1000). The IT Project Management was provided by Telecommunications Development Corporation (TDC).During major local and/or regional emergencies, the UCC will provide centralized regional coordination hub as a function of the DC Homeland Security and Emergency Management Agency (HSEMA). The construction of the Unified Communications Center was completed in Summer 2006, and the new facility was activated in Fall 2006. Jacobs Engineering was the construction management firm on the project that made the nomination for this award. DMJM Design was the project architect, and Jair Lynch/Tompkins Joint Venture was the general contractor. The innovative technology project management on this endeavor was provided by Telecommunications Development Corporation (TDC). The UCC project had previously won the Washington Building Congress (WBC) Craftsmanship Award for the construction of the Call Floor ceiling system. |
To improve public safety and provide first-class customer service, the District constructed a state-of-the-art Unified Communications Center (UCC) that provides economic development and community revitalization benefits; takes advantage of the consolidation of like functions, personnel, equipment and systems; provides cost benefits from consolidation; and improves service delivery and public safety for District residents. The UCC facility, located on the East Campus of the St. Elizabeths Hospital site, consolidates the "command and control" functions of the Office of Unified Communications (OUC).
The center, which opened September 26, 2006, receives and processes calls to 911, 311, and the District's customer service line, (202) 727-1000. During major emergencies, the center becomes the District’s Emergency Operations Center (Mayor's Command Center) and provides a central location for multiple agencies to address any variety of situations.
